DFW ProAm Jam 2012

WOW what a weekend!

This was our first year to be on staff at Lori Hayner’s 3rd annual DFW ProAm Jam. Lori did an amazing job of taking care of the staff, but even more importantly, she truly went out of her way to take care of the DANCERS who came to the event – especially the juniors!

We were both very much looking forward to it, but also knew it would be an interesting experience, as Lori had brought in some instructors and pros from outside of our region.  Lori knew what she was doing!  Trent and I both had an amazing time getting to meet and hang out with some of the younger, up and coming pros – Sheven, Stephen, Hugo, Sabrina and Brianne. We were both so impressed with their level of professionalism and respect, while still inspiring us with their enthusiasm and new and fresh ideas in west coast swing.  We both look forward to seeing their growth in this dance and they continue to move up the ranks.

The Pro team challenge this year was an absolute hoot and we had a blast being a part of it – TEAM ONE!  Hopefully someone will have video out soon, because really there is no way to describe in words.  It simply must be seen!

Chip and I got to put our routine on the floor for the first time this weekend as well!  We’ve been working on it since January and it was our debut.  Although we had our mistakes, we were both pleased with the overall performance and we can’t wait to get it back out on the floor again this weekend at Michigan Classic!  Thanks to both our spouses – Janice and Trent – for supporting us and helping us – we can’t do it without you guys!

I want to give a shout out to Louie “Costrell” again for doing an amazing job with me in the ProAm Novice division – 3rd place!  Trent and I are also honored to have had the opportunity to dance with Suma and Matthew in the pro-ams this weekend!  We hope you had as much fun as we did!

Thanks again to Henry, who is fast becoming my “permanent” J&J partner for taking care of me on the floor again.  🙂  And of course, thanks to my Trent for all your support and for making me comfortable in my first All Star/Open Strictly competition (going up against the very people that I have looked up to for years!) and for taking us to 6th place in a really tough division!

I also want to take the time to thank both Lori and Doug for how they handled a very tough situation this weekend.  After scores were posted on Sunday, after all awards had already been given out, it was discovered that there were some clerical errors in how the scores were submitted and computed.  It is not an envious position to be in, but they both wanted to make sure to make things right and immediately took action as efficiently and professionally as they possible could.  They were transparent and did not try to cover up for the mistakes.  To that note, I also want to express my respect and thanks to Kelly who owned up to the scoring mistakes and did not try to blame anyone else – he simply took responsibility and immediately began working to remedy the problem.  I know that all three – Lori, Doug and Kelly – worked well into Sunday night and Monday morning to contact as many people as they could who were affected.  To paraphrase what someone said – mistakes happen to everyone; it’s in how you resolve those mistakes that show your true character.  And they all showed integrity, respect and professionalism.  I truly hope that the competitors that were affected can appreciate how hard they worked to get it resolved as quickly and with the least amount of drama possible.

All in all, an amazing weekend of dancing, and getting to gain some incredible new friends.  Definitely one to put on the list for next year!
